Abstract: The electricity is an important element for the growth in the industrial and business development. In. the face of competition between the generators and distributors of the electricity, it is expected that a market condition necessary to increase the efficiency of electric energy production and distribution will be . created which will offer low price, higher quality and more secure product. The present study deals with the economic aspect of the power distribution in competitive market for a radial distribution system. It decides the relative cost of energy for future increase in the load as well as gives the indication if the system expansion is required. It also helps in deciding on the approach to be used for the system expansion. Due to the low first cost and simplicity, power distribution network are ordinarily radial in nature. The radial network consists of a straightforward circuit arrangement with single path from the distribution substation to the end consumer. One of the drawbacks of the radial network is that as the distance of the load increases from the substation system losses increases; hence the relative cost of distribution to the far off loads is higher in comparison to the nearby loads. If the losses are excessively high then in addition to increased cost it may lead the consumer voltage to iii drop beyond the acceptable range therefore certain steps should be taken to reduce the losses. In the present work the load flow analysis for the radial distribution system is performed and a new 'approach to find the sensitivity of losses is introduced. The sensitivity of losses thus evaluated for each bus is proposed to be used for evaluating the cost of further power distribution. The developed approach can also be used by the management for future expansion of power distribution system in order to achieve better profit margin. A program in C is developed for the proposed scheme and also tested for a 33kV 41-bus radial distribution system for the zone of Bhopal city. iv
