Dams are large hydraulic structures constructed for the purpose of power generation, irrigation and flood control. Their roles in both the environment and the economy of a country are so important. Their design and construction should be carried out with a negligibly small risk. Failure of dam can cause havoc in the downstream. The main objective of this study is to study various failure risk of concrete gravity dams and their safety. By using computer program and methods available in literature the failure mode of the dams are worked out in simplified way. It is observed that dams are having more risk of failure in earthquake. Detail study on nonlinear seismic analysis: of the dams is carried out. The 2D modelling and analysis of the dam have been done using finite element software ABAQUS v6.7 for detail nonlinear: seismic study. Comparison of seismic response, of dams under various - level 'earthquakes is also present. The nonlinear seismic analysis is carried out to assess the risk to the dam and to suggest some -strengthening measures. Based on this study useful conclusions are drawn.en_US
