Today in India, most of the buildings are of Multi Storey Reinforced Concrete (MSRC) type especially in the urban regions and metropolitan -cities like, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Guwahati etc. Due to increase in seismicity of the Indian region and up gradation of relevant building codes, knowledge of the performance of the existing RC buildings designed as per earlier versions of code is of paramount importance. No doubt, the existing buildings are susceptible to huge loss of property and life in the event of moderate to large earthquakes. India has large number of deficient RC buildings whose performance need to be assessed and probable damage in the event of an earthquake has to be evaluated by using some reliable methodology. This study is carried out to explain the use of ANN to analyze performance of buildings. This tool is very powerful, compared to other methods. Based on selected effective design parameters of RC buildings and earthquake hazard at the site performance is evaluated. A pushover analysis of RC building have been carried out in SAP2000 where twenty four data set of building performance have been generated. The related structural parameters were determined by considering the structural damage parameters observed in earthquakes, concrete compressive strength, yield and ultimate strength of steel, transverse reinforcement, infill -wall ratio, short column, aspect ratio, P-A effect, axial load level, horizontal seismic coefficient and shear wall ratio. The ANN is used to determine the structural performance with satisfactory rate. The earthquake performance estimation based on above parameters varied between 78.78% to 93.82% depending upon number of data set, algorithm type and other parameters of the ANN modelling. The developed ANN tool may be used to estimate the performance of the existing RC buildings on the basis of the selected building parameters and estimated earthquake intensity of shaking. The method is very quick and quite reliable.en_US
