Abstract: In this dissertation, the physical and random causes of spatial variability in seismic ground motion are overviewed in details and its effects on the lifelines such as under and over-ground pipelines, bridges and transmission lines. The structural response due to SVGM may increase or decrease according to the properties of structures and factor responsible for SVGM. The simulation of homogeneous half-space, single horizontal layer with different thickness over the half-space model using the staggered grid finite difference method and the SV wave dominant point source have been carried out. The simulated results reveal that the trapping of body waves is not only the concept behind the Rayleigh wave generation. Taking account of the earthquake vulnerability of Ganga basin due to Himalayan based tectonic events at main boundary thrust (MBT), the characteristics of basin transduced and induced Rayleigh waves in Ganga basin on the basis of simulated Him-Ganga-basin model is presented. Simulated responses of Him-Ganga-basin model has been used for the differential ground motion and ground strains computations for 300 m, 600 m, 900 m and 1200 m spans for the earthquake resistant design of structures
