Abstract: Road transport plays an important role both from the point of view of enhancing employment potential and all round economic development of state. Taj Expressway project is a venture by Government of U.P connecting national capital with tourist attraction Agra through a new road of 6 lane access controlled expressway with brand name of Taj Expressway. The concept of Taj Expressway was initially conceived with idea of cutting down travel time between Noida and Agra The use of GIS in physical planning activities continues to grow. Route alignment planning for a new expressway on the regional level constitutes a complicated planning process which involves the consideration and analysis of various data sets. It also includes the development of alternative corridors for the planned transport link. The choice of a feasible corridor for a expressway is based mainly on the topography of the land. The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is mandatory to manage the variety of data sets from different sources. The present study is intended to explore and demonstrate the potentials of the use of GIS in the feasibility studies on Taj Expressway.
