Abstract: With the advent of Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence the concept of "Intelligent Transport System" has emerged as an important issue in Transportation Engineering. There are many Information Systems developed world wide. But there are no information systems developed in INDIA which meet the requirements of the travelers. Even the systems developed in abroad were either desk top systems or web based systems and have limited functionality. This Dissertation Work is an attempt to develop an Advanced Traveler Information System for Delhi Metro in GIS environment. This user friendly system provides complete information about public transport facilities available in Delhi. This system provides facilities to find shortest path between given locations based on road length and it can be accessed by Visual Basic with Map controls as an extension. This system provides menu driven interfaces which are easily understandable to the end users. As the main objective of ATIS is to provide information for maximum number of users, a new web based system is developed. Though these web maps give limited functionality of GIS, they don't require any GIS software on the client side. With this user can do panning, zooming, identification, displaying attributes and searching features. The system is developed in GIS environment and customized using Visual Basic. The web pages are designed using Hyper Text Mark-up Language and made interactive using java scripts.
