The state of Uttaranchal is a newly formed state which requires proper long term transportation planning. Especially the hilly topography and tourism potential calls for the development of long term transportation strategies. The study deals with preparing inventory of existing facilities in Garhwal region, comparing the road network of Uttaranchal with the neighbouring state of Himachal Pradesh and then finding the deficiencies in the present transportation facilities. The present study focuses on development of transportation strategies for the Garhwal Region which occupies almost half of the state, giving due considerations to its geographic and demographic characteristics, traffic characteristics, tourism and the guidelines given by third and fourth twenty years road development plans.
