Abstract: Hydrolysis is an important step in anaerobic treatment of wastewater and it takes place in the reactor itself. Hydrolysis of cellulose is an extra cellular process in which very less energy is involved. As the study to find the effect of hydrolysis on different substrate to micro organisms was not done earlier , so our main purpose was to investigate the effect of hydrolysis for different substrate to micro organisms and it was seen that the rate of solubilization decreased as we proceeded to higher substrate to micro organisms ratio. There are number of studies cited in the literature on diphasic anaerobic treatment. However, scanty information on the effect of the concentration of the microorganisms on hydrolysis is available in the literature. In. view of this the present investigation on hydrolysis of cellulose under anaerobic conditions has been taken. The concentration of substrate to microorganisms has been varied. Hydrolysis of cellulose has been monitored by measuring soluble COD at different time interval. The percent hydrolysis depends on F/M ratio. The initial pH also influences the hydrolysis.
