Abstract: Since 1982, Gajraula has fastly developed into a prominent industrial estate of Uttar Pradesh where most of the population is linked with industrial activity. During the last few years around 18 industries have come up from medium to large scale. Any anthropogenic activity leads to pollution of environment. The aim of the present study is to assess the water pollutional loads vis-a-vis present status of surface water environment and, thereby, to plan out the shortfalls to be met, vis-à-vis the limiting carrying capacity of surface water sources of the area. The surface water resources have been studied in terms of sources and sinks. The present state of quality and quantity has been assessed industry wise. The water quality in Ganga river and the combined flow to Ganga through Bagad river inlet has been assessed along with quantification of discharges around the year has been done. It is found that all industries are able to fulfill the discharge standards, except the distillery at Jubilant Organosys Ltd. The treated distillery effluent is discharged only during monsoon period when sufficient dilution is available in Bagad river as it is non perennial. Due to variability of monsoon period the management of disposal by this method has become difficult. The discharge standards in India for disposal in inland surface waters are more stringent than disposal on land. In this context an alternative method of disposal on land (Ferti-irrigation) has been designed to replace the present arrangement. Ferti-irrigation has been advocated, as it could be one of the most reasonable solutions to the health and safety of water resources against disposal by dilution.
