Abstract: Major portion of power generated in India is from thermal power plants. These plants produce 110 MT of ash as a waste which is posing serious Environmental problems. It has been estimated that one MW of power generation requires approximately one acre of land; which, a country like India where agriculture/industries are of prime importance can ill afford. The present study is confined to study the properties of bottom ash mixed with medium sand and to correlate mini SPT values with some of these properties. A total of 83 experiments were performed in the laboratory by varying the proportion of Badarpur sand and bottom ash. Specific gravity and maximum dry density obtained from experiments increases linearly as percentage of sand increases in mix. While optimum moisture content shows parabolic decrement as percentage of sand increases in mix. The maximum mini SPT value and needle penetration resistance increases upto 40% sand and 60% bottom ash. Correlations have been developed between mini SPT values and relative density of bottom ash and other mixes. Correlation among mini SPT values and needle penetration resistance has also been developed.
