Abstract: Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) is the name given to the application of computer and communications technologies to transport problems. Geographic information systems ( GIS ) represent an information technology composed of hardware, software and data used to gather, store, edit, display, and analyze geographic information. Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) is one of the user services provided by ITS. With Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) information, drivers make informed decisions and are better equipped to plan their route and estimate their travel time. Route planning is an essential component of ATIS; aiding travelers in choosing the optimal path to their destinations in term of travel distance, travel time. In this thesis an advance traveler information system for Delhi Metro Railway has been developed in GIS environment. This user friendly system provides complete information about Delhi Metro Railway and facilities available nearby metro terminals such as metro fare and frequency, bus routes, bus no., tourist places with in the Delhi city, monuments, important buildings, map of surrounded area, origin and destination points, bus fare, distances from origin to destination. The developed package can be used in metro stations, bus stands, tourist information centers, in personal computers to give information to the travelers. An attempt has been made to incorporate this system in Internet to facilitate the users.
