Abstract: A side sluice gate is a flow diversion device, in the side of a channel through which flow takes place to a side channel. A skew side sluice gate is a side sluice gate, which is skewed with respect to the side of the main channel, which makes an angle a with the side of the main channel. In the present study, the discharge characteristics of skew side sluice gate have been studied for both free and submerged flow conditions. The investigation has been done by undertaking experimental program involving variation in sluice gate opening (a), -side-sluic-e-gate-angle-(a)--for—free-flow-conditionAn-submerged-flow-eonditionTthe-ratio-tail water depth (yt) to sluice gate opening (a) has also varied in the experiments. The skew side sluice gate discharge has been computed using the concept of elementary discharge coefficient by integrating spatially varied flow equation over the side sluice gate length. The elementary discharge coefficient equations have been obtained by minimizing the absolute error between the observed and computed side sluice gate discharges for a set of data for a particular angle of side sluice gate for both free and submerged flow conditions. Generalized equations for elementary discharge coefficient for both free and submerged flow conditions for all angles have been developed.
