Abstract: In countries where economies are weak, it becomes crucial for those concerned with developmental policies to adopt approaches which will ensure that every single cent available is used to develop the country. Such a situation therefore calls for economic planners to team up with the relevant technocrats in all fields to facilitate a conducive environment for economic development. Road traffic accidents have been recognized as one of those adverse elements which contribute to the suffocation of economic growth in the developing countries, due to the high cost related to them, hence causing social and economic concern. The foundation of traffic safety work is information. The primary task is to establish a traffic accident database and than to maintain and analyse the same. The use of computers makes this effort more comprehensive and productive. Till now the data bases are in the form of linear record file system, nicely helpful in placing the analysed information only in tabular forms. For a better understanding and good decision-making visibility was not apparent in the databases and in its outcome. The GIS (Geographical Information System) a graphical information system that supports display and analysis of spatial data has revolutionised making and use of maps where as some times back it was a tedious exercise. GIS is a technology which when incorporated in the analysis of road traffic accidents, can alleviate this menace. It is very useful to integrate varied types of databases as and when required for the development of the required accident analysis. It also helps in understanding the characteristics of concerned area in aggregate by taking care of accident data and by linking to geographical features. Rirther accidents do not occur uniformly and their occurrence may be due to the number of limitations existing in those areas. These accidents could be studied and analysed to identify in some form of patterns through GIS. This report discusses the how to alleviate the problem of road traffic accidents through the inclusion of new technologies such as GIS in developing countries, so that proper decisions can be taken to precisely to remedy the occurrences of road traffic accidents.
