WEB-BASED INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR ROORKEE AREA

Abstract

There is always a need of a centralized database for any city so that the information should be available for each user. For minimizing the duplication of data and the efforts being takes place in recollection of data, the centralized database is necessary for any city. The centralized database can be useful for various utilities and planning such as sewer planning, tourist information, hospital, telephone lines and accommodation utility. Now a day's Internet is becoming a popular mode of communication of information, for making database accessible for large community, it should be placed in the centralized system, which is accessible to all the users. For database related to city not only requires the information but also requires the spatial information (i.e. location). GIS is a system, which relate the spatial and non-spatial information together. For arranging the spatial and non- spatial information on Internet the web GIS is emerging techniques. In this present work, a "Web-based Information System for Roorkee area" is developed. The main page Linked with Satellite Image Map, Ward Wise Detailed Map and Main Map. Satellite Image Map is a static View only map, view only by simple Web browser. The Main Map is interactive Web map created by HTML Image Mapper giving information about the Road and drainage networks. Ward wise detail map is an Applet map, which is viewed only on Java viewer. These maps are prepared using GIS software such as ArcView, GeoMedia and utilities such as Jshape and HTML image Mapper. These web maps are prepared to give the limited functionality of GIS, without requiring any web GIS software on the client's side. User can able to do functionality like panning, zooming, identification, selection and displaying various themes.
