COMPUTER AIDED TENDER PREPARATION FOR BUILDING CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

Abstract

Use of computer in calculating the quantity of materials and estimating the buildings is very much in its infancy in India. However, many architectural and engineering firms are preparing specifications and bill of quantities forming the part of tender document with help of computers ignoring the calculation of quantities and cost which is still done by manual process. It is therefore high time that engineers and architects come forward to prepare estimate of buildings, which forms the basis to prepare a tender with the aid of computer technology, for reducing the time consumed in preparing the estimate or a building, and to match with other professionals who have gone far ahead in using the computers in their field of specialization. In the present study general purpose software is developed for preparing estimate of a building. For 13 items of work for any single storey building i.e. earthwork, PCC in foundation, foundation masonry, DPC and plinth beam, brickwork in superstructure, RCC work, filling, soling, flooring, plastering, and distempering, quantities are calculated and estimate is prepared as per DSR 97 rates. The whole exercise is carried out in Visual Basic environment. Validation of results has also been done. This dissertation therefore is a humble attempt to prepare cost estimate of a building using a computer hence making the process of tender preparation more computerized..
