dc.description.abstract | Natural water resources are polluted with different sources such as domestic, Industrial, agricultural etc, most of them being biological in nature. Most industrial water along with municipal sewage make up to about 95% of the total wastewater generated. Biodegradable wastewaters are characterized by a specific BOD/COD value and other nutrients. It is often necessary for designers to generate optimal designs for effluent treatment through conventional or modified methods. Activated sludge process and its modifications like extended aeration system by pasveer ditches and carrousel ditches have been acclimatized as prudent methods to provide biological treatment to wastewaters like sewage, dairy effluents etc. Carrousel ditches are deep oxidation ditches to economise in land requirements. Reduction in land requirement in carrousel system is brought about by providing deeper ditches (2.5 to 5 m), as compared to 1-1.5 m in oxidation ditches. Aeration is concentrated at one point only, in carrousel as compared to distributed over the length of the oxidation ditch. This enhances oxygen transfer, which makes up the dissolved oxygen deficit from saturation The present work deals with the study of cost effectiveness of carrousel ditch with respect to activated sludge process, oxidation ditch at required removal efficiencies for dairy effluents which can be extended to biodegradable wastes of similar treatability potential. | en_US |
