The development of a country can be judged from the up to dateness and coverage of its area by modern maps. All developing countries need maps for achieving the plan targets. In fact, all planning and subsequent execution depends upon the reliability of maps. If maps are unavailable or unreliable, much human labour and finance will be required to plan various projects. An accurate map helps in producing accurate estimates of projects. Civil engineers may require maps for planning and designing new structures, such as roads, bridges, dams, and houses etc. Neither dams can be constructed nor are bridges laid without first having the topographical maps. These maps are also required for registration of satellite images in image processing and registration of thematic maps in GIS. In India, Survey of India (SOI), Dehradun is oldest and biggest organisation for preparing and publishing the topographic maps. User who is in need of the topographical maps from SOI should know the Map sheet number, Whether the map belong to restricted or unrestricted area, Whether the map has been published or unpublished. Getting these map details from the hard copy is somewhat difficult and time consuming. A map referencing system using the capabilities of GIS will be able to give all above information with ease. In present work, an Information system has been developed to find out a map sheet according to Lat Long, Place or Sheet No. Only SOI maps at 1;50,000, 1:250,000 and 1:1m scales are included in the database.en_US
