Abstract: The quality and strength of reinforced concrete depends not only on concrete but steel as well. Different types of steel are available in market, out of which Cold Twisted Deformed (CTD) rebars are easily available in market and generally used by common people. Presently a new type of steel has been introduced into the market known as Thero-Mechanically Treated rebars. It has quality superior than CT]) but not very common in the present time, because of lack of availability in the market. The objective of work was to find out actual performance of beam section with TMT and CTD rebars and compare their merits and demerits. A comparative experimental study has been carried out on these two types of bars. Study shows that the behaviour of TMT rebars is close to mild steel having higher yield strength and elongation. Laboratory tests of TMT and CTD rebars indicate that the steel bars possess much higher 0.2 percent proof stress than the value taken in design (415 IVIPa for Fe 415). The ultimate strength of TMT is more than CTD rebars. The initial deflection of beams with TMT rebars is less compare to beams CTD rebars but after the yielding of steel the deflection of beam with TMT is more than CTD rebars Limit state method of design shows that the actual moment carrying capacity of section is more than theoretical value by 10 to 15 percent.
