Abstract: | Retaining wall is generally used to stabilize earth in areas where abrupt change in elevation occurs. It is very important and widely used structure especially in construction and maintenance of highways. The cost of construction of retaining wall is about 25 to 35 percent of total cost of road construction. Hence selection of a particular type of wall and its design with adequate safety and economy deserves attention. Design as we known is an art which can always be improved. Use of computer has made it possible to refine the design, which is quite cumbersome if done manually. In the present dissertation an attempt has been made to develop user friendly computer program.for the design and drafting of cantilever retaining wall. The ease and flexibility incorporated in the program has given prime importance while developing the program. Graphics is added in the program to give the designer a better feel of design. The program is efficient enough to take into account different soil and loading conditions usually encountered in practice. Earth pressure due to backfill, point load, line load, strip load, water pressure, earthquake are accounted in design. Earthquake force is taken into account as per IS:1893-1984 provisions and for the computation of lateral pressure due to point load, line load and strip load Terzaghi's formulae has been used. The design of stem, toe and heel is done by working stress method of design. Parametric study is carried out which shows that with the increase in backfill slope and horizontal seismic coefficient there is increase in B/H ratio and area of steel. It is also seen that with the increase in allowable bearing pressure and ratio of depth of water table with height of wall B/H ratio and area of steel decreases |
