Issue Date: 2001
Abstract: Dairy wastewater is the wastewater generated from milk processing industries, and is biodegradable in nature. Carrousel system, which is a modification of extended aeration system, is known to be highly efficient in treating biodegradable wastewaters. Carrousel systems are deep oxidation ditches, economising in land and power requirements, while keeping the required effluent standard. Modified Carrousel system has been reported to further economise in the design of carrousel type units. Also, modified carrousel systems have shown to be a better in overall treatment performance than common carrousel system at the same power levels. The present work deals with the study on efficacy of the common, and modified carrousel system for treatment of dairy wastewater. Various relevant dimensionless numbers have been applied to the reported design/ performance data for ascertaining oxygen transfer efficiency in the prototype design with respect to performance at laboratory level. The present work deals with various aspects leading to a prudent comparison of common and modified carrousel system with extended aeration type of activated sludge process.
