There has been a significant interest in the application of Geographic Information System(GIS) to address the special needs of the transportation industry during the past several years. GIS poses a technology with considerable potential for achieving dramatic gains in efficiency and productivity for traditional transportation applications (Road Networking, Highway Management, Route Alignment etc.), as well as creating the opportunity to develop new applications that were considered infeasible. In the present work, the spatial data handling and the SQL capabilities of a GIS has been utilised. It has been interfaced with a Rural Road Networking Model (RRNP) developed at Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), New Delhi. The parameter, landuse which influence the Road Networking is considered in arriving at the optimum network. Thus, it is clear that the GIS capabilities could be efficiently integrated with any networking model to obtain better results. However, hardware capabilities are significantly more advanced than software, and both hardware and software are well ahead of the transportation engineering profession's ability to make full and effective use of this technology.en_US
