Abstract: | Industrial activities produce various types of wastes, a significant quantum of which may be hazardous in nature that can place human health and environment at risk, when dumped into the environment without adequate safety measures. Since Industrialization is the backbone of our progress and development, it cannot be stopped, but there is a need for improved management of these hazardous wastes to avoid its ill impacts in the future. But hazardous waste treatment is a costly affair since the facility demands specialized supervision and instrumentation, hence it is almost impossible for an individual industrial unit especially small plants to have an individual well-equipped treatment facility for hazardous wastes disposal. So this centralized hazardous waste disposal facility along with leachate collection plays a significant role where all the industrial units will send their hazardous wastes to centralized treatment facility for appropriate handling of wastes on a chargeable basis. The report presents a more comprehensive review of literature about hazardous wastes and its impacts on the environment, hazardous waste legislations and the various treatment techniques available to us for the treatment of hazardous wastes. The proposed project is to design a centralized hazardous waste disposal facility along with leachate Collection & treatment for different types of hazardous wastes coming from 850 industrial units in an industrial area. The Centralized hazardous waste disposal plant has been designed to include those treatment technologies, which are environmentally friendly and are economical according to Indian context. Process design is also undertaken to include flow scheme, process description, design of individual units and equipments, plant layout, datasheets. Moreover we have designed a secured Hazardous waste landfill having a provision for leachate collection and treatment for 30 years of life period and its post closure. A cost estimation has also been done for setting up such a centralized facility.. |
