Abstract: One of the current issues pertaining to urban traffic is the role of public transport. The recent energy crisis, the steep fall in the environment quality of roads and the sever congestion have brought this subject to the fore. With the continuous increase in population and corresponding growth of vehicle, the road network has come under heavy strain in most of the cities. Quality of Public transport in cities is fast deteriorating in almost all countries and especially in the developing world. Indian cities of all sizes are facing the crisis of urban transport and the problem of traffic congestion, road accidents and air pollution is becoming more and more acute. In medium and small cities intermediate public transport is struggling to meet the mobility demands of the city. In India majority of population belonging to middle income group and below poverty line and unable to afford personal vehicles and expanding urban areas leading to longer travel distance. This results into increased demand of public transport system. Therefore an appropriate public transportation system is needed. This Dissertation deals with existing public transportation system scenario in Ajmer city, identification of problems and recommendation and proposal for public transportation system..
