Community has been striving to achieve sustainable solid waste management for the past few decades. The long term perspective is clear waste management will further orient towards resource management. The municipal solid waste management of BHEL Bhopal has been studied in this thesis work. BHEL Bhopal follows crude disposal system for municipal solid waste management. At present there are no processing practices followed for waste management in BHEL township. The waste is finally dumped at Jambori ground where there are no engineered facilities for waste disposal.. Only segregation and salvaging of waste is done with no institutional control over rag pickers. The present practice of crude dumping will last till 2015 with present conditions. Considering the heavy expenditure involved in solid waste management it is imperative for BHEL Bhopal to adopt holistic approach to improve the environmental condition. Other than following the MSW (M&H) rules 2000 they should encourage waste reduction and processing. To make the system better some of the measures like reduction of waste at the source, reuse and recycling practices, awareness campaign for common people and public private partnership with NGO's assistances have been suggested. A firework campaign is needed to initiate new understanding to accept waste as a raw material or new resource. Recycling, recovery and reuse are the main techniques accepted as waste management. But the actual importance is to initiate source reduction for which common public has to play an important role. In order to promote eco-planning, common man has to come ahead for waste management, starting from the grass root. Finally municipal solid waste management should lead to "end of pipe" concept which forms part of global strategy to reduce carbon emission and climate change.en_US
