dc.description.abstractCoal is an impartant energy source. The coal deposit in the country is unique in disposition and broadly confined in what is popularly called 'Golden Triangle'. The rapid growth of demand for coal in industrial and especialy for power sector has resulted in increased cross country movement of coal. The conventional means of transportation of coal are railways and roads, which' create noise and air pollution in the form of dust and autoexhaust. Now-a-days a new mode of coal transport is in a development stage ie transport of coal slurry through pipelines. The wastewater thus obtained has been found to pose environmental problem. The biochemical oxygen demand of this wastewater is above the I.S. code limit hence needs treatment before disposal. In the present work, a systematic study has been carried out for removal of BOD using activated characoal and commercial charcoal. Both the adsorbents were found to be very effective in removing BOD to a limit well within IS code valueen_US
