The problem of entry of sediment into canals taking off from alluvial streams is not new to hydraulic engineers. It ha.s --•a-tz(ta received considerable attention in the past DIM+ various control measures viz. preventive and curative. The two most prevalent means of sediment control are the provision of a sediment excluder at the head works and provision of a sediment ejector in the canal, a little downstream of the head works. The present thesis relates to some aspects of the design of sediment excluders. In the present thesis a computer program has been developed for the optimal design of sediment excluder considering the actual cost of the structure. The program designs the excluder on the basis of established laws of sediment transport. This program has been run for uniform and non uniform sediments and is found to produce satisfactory results.en_US
