dc.description.abstractThese days concrete pavements are receiving increasing attention of engineers, due to easy availability of cement and its mass production. Also, there is a growing interest in the construction of concrete airfield pavements, due to its high strength, durability, better serviceability and overall economy in the long run. With the advent of modernisation and mechanisation, emphasis is on the construction of thinner pavement sections, of better quality, which can bear the heavy loads of modern aircrafts. It the low strength to weight ratio of concrete can be overcome by either lowering the density of the material or by increasing the strength of concrete, a concrete can be achieved of low weight and high strength. This high strength concrete, effectively reinforced by randomly distributed steel fibres, can be used as an excellent paving material for airfield pavements. The high strength steel fibre reinforced concrete (HS SFRC), is a concrete designed to achieve a compressive strength > 41 MPa, made of hydraulic cements and containing fine and coarse aggregates, and discontinuous, unconnected, randomly distributed steel fibres.en_US
