Abstract: It is important that today's practising structural engineer recognises that uncertainty exists and learns to evaluate it rationally, and incorporate it into structural design practice. It is rational to introduce concept of probability as a logical design approach. For the development of probability based limit state design and reliability analysis of structures, statistical description of loads and resistance variables are required. In the present study data are generated for compressive strength and flexural strength of concrete, pulse velocity through concrete and ultimate tensile strength of H.T. wires. The data are subjected to statistical analysis. The compressive strength data have been subjected to time variant and time invariant probability modelling. Time invariant probability modelling has been done for flexural strength of concrete. Reliability analysis of H.T. steel and concrete has been performed at limit states of prestressing, transfer of prestress, handling or erection and at limit state of working load condition, to find out the material which is more likely to fail at one limit state or other. Various codes of specification i.e. IS 1343 : 1980, ACI 318 - 1971, CP 110 : 72 and IS 1343 : 1964 have been used for determination of probability of failure for materials (concrete and H.T. steel). iii
