Abstract: Hydel Power House Super Structure have been analysed as two dimensional plane frames which requires this space frame to be resolved in to system of longitudinal and transverse frames together with the resolution of the loads and forces into the planes in which they act. In this method the errors are inherent as this approach completely neglects the torsional and flexural rigidities of the members of the frames which effects the stress distribution, resulting in to conservative/under designs. On the other hand, three dimensional analysis of the such structure takes into account the torsional and flexural rigidities of cross members therefore gives a more rational picture of stress distribution. It has become more important in the case of Hydel Power House super structure frame where control room, and other ancilliatory housings makes the structure more complicated. Under these conditions of loading and structural unsymmetry, two dimensional analysis can not be relied upon to give a true picture of stress distribution and displacements. This dissertation describes the functional details of power house, the loads acting on the structure and the method of stiffness matrix for analysis of space frames. The frame selected a simple one of the erection bay of Hydel Power House. A frame analysis is carried out for two dimensional frame and for three dimensional frame and a comparative study is made for results obtained in 2D analysis and 3D analysis and also the typical column members and beam members have been designed for different load combinations. The computer program used in this dissertation for the analysis and design of the structure is Integrated Structural Design System which encompassing facilities for analysis/design and drafting. These modules are called STAAD-III, STAADPL and STAAD-DRAFT. The program is the proprietary of Research Engineer, Inc. 303 Pavillions at Greentree Marlton, NJ08053.
