Plates often contain openings. of varying sizes for ducts, pipes ventilation and other services. For small opening, strong band is provided near the opening in the form of ring or rectangle according to the shape of the opening, but if the opening size is large, proper analysis must be done because the behaviour of structure changes significantly. Various method of analysis are available to analyse the plates with opening but each method has its own limitations. In case of different material and different shapes of opening, many methods often leads to laborious calculations, especially in asymmetrical cases. Use of finite element method is found to be very convenient because of modern facility of computers. In the present dissertation, finite element method using plate bending element has been used. Four locations of opening has been analysed and their effects have been discussed. Eight noded isoparametric plate bending element has been used which gives very accurate result in case of opening. Analysis shows that in case of central opening, positive moments decreases at large opening because in solid plate maximum positive moment occurs at mid span of plate, and if we remove this portion by providing opening, it reduces. Corner opening and opening at long side shows greater increase in moment. When opening is provided at the short side very small increase or decrease in moment has been observed.en_US
