Issue Date: 1996
Abstract: A bench scale UASB reactor of 46. litre capacity has been started using digested sewage sludge as a seed, Synthetic molasses waste having COD of the order of 1000 mg/1 was prepared to feed the reactor. Lettinga's guide lines were followed to start the reactor. COD removal has found to be near to 75%. To determine the flow characteristics tracer study has been carried out using lithium cloride as a tracer. Concentration of lithium was found 9 using flame photo-meter. Above study infers that in the blanket zone, flow is highly dispersed for lithium whereas in the bed zone nature of the flow is in between disperesed flow and plug flow. . Experimental detention times at two flow rates of 4.8 1/hr and 8.4 1/hr were not much indifferent. COD removal was also found to be nearly equal to 75% at the two above mentioned flow rates.,
