dc.description.abstractBitumen being a thermoplastic material, bitumen changes its consistency with change in temperature. Bituminous bindes soften whenever they are heated and become more viscous when cooled. Thus for proper design and consruction, the actual consistency at different temperatures should be known. The bituminous mixes react to changes in temperature in the same manner as the bitumen alone. During the warmer seasons of the year, when sufficient heat energy is absorbed from the sun to soften or render the bituminous binder fluid, bituminous paving mixtures notably those containing excessive bitumen percentages, are liable to displacement under traffic. As the temperature of bituminous mixes is increased their load carrying capacity accordingly decreases. Under low temperatures, the mix becomes, quite brittle. Under the conditions of chilling, cracking effects are pronounced. At normal temperatures bituminous mixes are plastic. That is, they deform under the continuous application of relatively small loads. When chilled to low temperature, the behaviour of bituminous mixes under load is more nearly similar to that of such brittle materials as portland cement concrete, stone and cast iron. Climatic temperature has a significant influence on the load supporting characteristics of a pavement. The stability of a bituminous mixes is appraised in relation to the maximum temperature which the mix is likely to undergo under service condition. In places where the temperatures are extreme, due consideration to the binder quality and its characteristics at low temperatures should be given in addition to usual requirements at high temperature. It is intended to study in this investigation, the effect of temperature and water on different surfaces of flexible pavements, for their quantitative assessment.en_US
