dc.description.abstractThe alarming growth of urban centres is a well known global phenomenon and India is no exception. The transportation problems of the Delhi have been ever-increasing and there has been a need, felt for a long time, for planning of a comprehensive transport system. Transport System Management schemes like road widening, intersection improvement, exclusiVe bus lanes, one way streets, preferential treatment of buses, etc. along high volume corridors will be of great help, but only for short term duration. However, in long term rail based MASS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM (MRTS) is inevitable for Delhi, along high volume corridors. Firstly in this study it is established that we cannot escape from the need of MRTS for Delhi. It should be immediately implemented. For the implementation, the requirements of the proposed MRTS have been studied and analysed in this thesis. Based upon two identified heavy volume corridors i.e. East-West Corridor consisting of Tilak Bridge to Rohini and North-South Corridors consisting of Khybar Pass to Sewa. N''Iar Railway Station, have been analysed and passenger flow is found for the design period (life period) of MRTS by making the Regression models. Also the requirement of number of buses (aS existing system) and number of MRTS (Metro Rakes in place of existing system ) for same period has been found out.en_US
