Abstract: In the present times of fast industrial development and fast growth of population, assimilating capacity of our water, land and atmosphere has been overstrained. Pulp and/Paper industry is one of such ever expanding industry which is consuming a large quantity of water and discharging huge quantity of highly polluted water. Raw material shortage and depleting forest cover has forced the industry to use the-agricultural residues as raw material. A number of small paper and pulp mills based on agricultural residue has come up all over_India during last 20 years. Due to economical reasons these industries are not capable to put up a chemical recovery unit and as such they discharge highly polluted waste water especially "Black Liquor" from pulping section. This black liquorldischarge very high concentration of pollutants such as COD, BOD, Colour and total solids into the natural water sources or on land. In the present study an attempt has been made for the treatment of black liquor of kraft paper mill by immobilizing the Acinetobacter calcoaceticus in calcium alginate beads by assess-ing the percentage removal of COD, colour and total solids.
