In our fast changing world of today, rapid industrialisation and population explosion have imposed unprecedented demands on our natural and artificial resources. There is limitation of resources. The great challenges to town planners, designers, administrators and service organizations are to meet the enormous public demands with limited resources optimally and in most efficient manner. For this they need upto-date information of the resources and services. Available reports and maps prepared and maintained by various agencies do not give all information in required form, and above all, it does not show any information in the time gap from survey period to current study year. In the present study the utility mapping in GIS environment is undertaken. It has capability to incorporate all the utility information in text mode as well as in graphic mode. Descriptive informatioins are archieved in Database component. Any data can be incorporated at any stage, and the required information can be retrieved selectively or combinedly. It can provide maps graphs and tables of utility information in hard copy as well as in soft copy form as per requirement. It can change the format content and scale instantantly. In addition it has many more capabilities to meet the requirements of user most economically. In terms of the management and analytical facilities, GIS can therefore, be considered as one of the fundamental advances in asset ( iv ) management, encompassing a wide spectrum of functions and used by every level of an organization from the execution to the operational spearhead. The trend indicates that preparation, updating and maintenance of utility maps in GIS environment will substitute the currently used methods giving more upto date information, accurately, efficiently and economically.en_US
