Issue Date: 1995
Abstract: A number of earthquakes every year cause loss of life and property all over the world. This results in severe and widespread disruption of national economies. In India, several major earthquakes have occurred in past in Assam, Bihar, Northern Himalayas, and Cutch. Many other smaller earthquakes have also occurred almost every where in India. So there is a great need for better dynamic analysis of structures both under and over the ground. Now a days a large number of facilities such as water supply lines, tunnels , power houses, bunkers, etc., are constructed underground. For heavy structures, foundations are quite deep in the form of piles or wells. It is well known fact that the effect of earthquake decreases with depth below ground level. So the under ground structures could be safer than the over ground structures. That is why under ground structures are growing component of civil Engineering constructions. Therefore, a batter and safer design of these structures is the call of the day
