dc.description.abstract | Earthquakes have claimed large numbers of human lives over the history of mankind, Recently Uttarkashi earthquake of 1991 and Latur earthquake of 1993 have caused untold miseries to many. A major earthquake adversely affects practically all aspects of human activity and ,jeopardises the total functioning of the society, besides becoming a big economic burden on the country taking back its development by several years. Devasting destructions can take place in a matter of few seconds without any prior warning. It is true that we cannot stop the occurance of' this natural phenomena causing disasters, but surely their impact on human life and property can be considerably reduced through protective and preventive planning measures. In the past severe earthquakes all over the world, the masonry buildings have been damaged most because of their heavy weight, small or no tensile strength, small shearing resistance, lack of proper bond between longitudinal and cross walls and poor workmanship.... | en_US |
