|Abstract:||In this Dissertation, an Improved Ethernet like Protocol, which is suitable for High Speed Bus LANs, is studied and analyzed using simulation methodology. This protocol, also called "Piggyback Ethernet" can be viewed as a very simple and natural extension of commercial Ethernet. Generally collision protocols are inefficient for fast or long bus networks because of the constraint on minimum packet length. Also the efficiency reduces at heavy load due to increased probability of collisions. Piggyback Ethernet schemes, based on Scheduling Delay Access Mechanism, have been suggested to avoid the need to inflate packets to the minimum length and to reduce the probability of collisions. The presented protocol incurs no synchronization overhead under very light load and under very heavy traffic conditions. It performs better than the CSMA/CD protocol. "Piggyback Ethernet" is implementable on the basis of a simple, unsegmented, bidirecional, broadcast type carrier. Thus it can be viewed as a refinement of commercial ethernet aimed at providing high performance service in the circumstances when the packet length is small in comparison to the end to end propagation length of the bus.|
