Ethernet which has the largest user base covering about 70% of the market, is one of the several standards on Local Area Networks adopted by IEEE. The 10 Mbps data rate appeared generous when Ethernet first appeared. But with the advent of Client-server computing and Multimedia applications, 10 Mbps seems to be inadequate. There is a need for some new network technology which can provide more bandwidth and can make use of existing network infrastructure. This dissertation aims to introduce such new technologies offering 100 Mbps data rate with minor changes in the existing network infrastructure. Cost performance study has also been made for these new alternatives and other new concepts. Fast Ethernet, an easy upgrade of Ethernet offering 100 Mbps has been simulated and the effect of various parameters (e.g., load, delay, throughput) has been- analyzed- in this -dissertation. It has been shown that Fast Ethernet ,provides substantial cost benefitsen_US
