Abstract: Industrial and domestic waste water today pose the biggest challenge to the already fragile environment. Hence an effective method of waste water treatment has become inevitable in all kind of operation. Moreover solids in suspension of the wastewater stream is visibly- one of the culprit. Therefore this has drawn enormous attention during the recent years. Design of settling tank is of prime- importance because of its huge cost involved and its capability to influence the performance of the whole treatment plant. Several methods are being used today by design and practicing engineers for an effectivL settling tank, uses thumb ruleS, empirical relations, 'field tests and involves manual calculation and graphical manipulation. The manual and graphical methods have its inherited weakness in terms of error incurred and time consumed. Thus an attempt has been made in this study to overcome the above shortcoming and evolve a faster and efficient method of design with the use of computers. The design of clarifier in the regime of discrete and flocculent settling involves determination of various parameter by graphical method. In the computer algorithm developed this is carried out by generating the iso-percentage removal curve at the desired resolution and and a forward marching search method is implemmted to achieve the desired removal ratio.
