Abstract: About seventy five percent population of India lives in Rural areas. Currently, only a little over one third of the villages have all-weather roads. The appropriate construction technique of rural roads is very important for the general • welfare of the country as a whole and in particular: (a) For the better marketing of agriculture produce. (b) For the social and political progress of the rural population, and As a complement to railways. The economy in the construction of rural roads can best be achieved when the locally available resources i.e. man power and materials are used. Subgrade is the most important component of a pavement layers. There are a large number of factors which affect the subgrade performance. The important factors are : types of soils, moisture conditions of subgrade, compac- tion of•soils and drainage conditions of subgrade, etc. If the subgrade is not properly designed then the road will fail ultima- tely within the design period. In the present study two types of soils (i) sandy soil and (ii) clayey soil, are used. Both types of soils are tested under soaked and unsoaked moisture conditions. The bricks are used as a soling over subgrade and tested for different types of wheel loads and wheel pressures. This type of construction may be done by "Labour Intensive Construction Techniques". iv In the rural roads, the bullock carts are the predominant traffic with a maximum wheel load and maximum pressure of appro- ximately 1200 kg and 57 kg/cm2 respectively. The tyre contact pressure varies with respect to the width of the wheel tyre and pavement type. Due to heavy pressure the wear and tear is severe at upper layer of the pavement. Besides Bullock-carts, the Trucks, Buses, Tractor - Trailors etc. also ply-on rural roads. The maximum wheel load and pressure for the commercial traffic can be considered as 5100 kg and 7 kg/cm2 respectively. Five types of plates (wheel tyres) have been used for evaluation of pavement under the present study. In this investigation the following parameters have been considered : 1. Variation of E-values for different subgrade conditions 2. Variation of K-values for different subgrade conditions 3. Variation of CBR values for different subgrade conditions 4. Variation of settlement of brick soling with respect to load for different types of contact plates. 5 Determination of pavement thickness for different allowable deflections for Village Roads and Other District Roads separately by Burmister's theory. 6. Determination of pavement thickness for different subgrade conditions by CBR design curve developed by CRRI. 7 Economic analysis of brick soling over bubgrade as construction technique.
