Switched Reluctance Motors are characterized by variable reluctance in its main flux path, and different number of poles on stator and rotor. Stator have concentrated windings placed over poles. The stator phase currents are switched ON and OFF in synchronism with rotor position to ensure continuous rotation. Because of these features, the design procedure of these motors is different from that of conventional rotating induction motors, and presents a number of problems. This dissertation presents the methodology of Computer Aided Design of a Switched Reluctance Motor.. Optimization of the design is done with the help of Interior penalty function method. In this method, firstly the constrained minimization problem is converted in to an unconstrained minimization problem. Thereafter Davidon-Fletcher-Powell's method and cubic interpolation method for one dimensional search are used. Optimization is done for minimum cost taking six independent variables and eleven constraints. A number of specific designs have been done as examples, and results compared.en_US
