The wastewaters generated from various processing units of Vanaspati Manufacturing Plant, will have high temperature, high Oil & grease, S.S., COD and BOD values. The major hazards created by this wastewater are due to the presence of high concentration of Oil & grease. When such oily waste is discharged into surface water, it creates objectionable odour, undesi-rable appearance and consumes dissolved oxygen from water, which is required by aquatic life. Therefore, it is necessary to give proper treatment to such wastewater, before discharging it into the natural stream in order to meet the effluent standards, as stipulated by Pollution Control Board. Various physico-chemical and biological treatment methods have been successfully employed for the treatment of such oily wastewater.- In view of the availability of scanty literature on physico-chemical coagulation process for the treatment of oily wastes, attempts have been made in the present project to study the performance of various coagulants like - lime, alum, ferric chloride, alum added with lime and ferric chloride added with lime were tried in removing various pollution parameters from wastewater. Experimental results revealed that for the treatment of wastewater from Vanaspati Manufacturing Plant, coagulation is a good method. Very High Oil & grease, COD and S.S. removals can be achieved by adding chemical coagula-nts, such as alum and lime or ferric chloride and lime. 'For further treatment of waste, one of the biological treatment method may be employed. But this further treatment is rather optional as it is very convenient for this plant to get rid of the partly treated wastes by discharging them into the Municipal sewage system.en_US
