dc.description.abstractThe Free Speed of the vehicle depends on various factors viz. Vehicular Characteristics, Road Characteristics, Driver Characteristics and Environmental factors. In this thesis, an attempt has been made to find out the effect of Pavement Width, Raining Conditions, and Light Conditions. The studies have been conducted on Delhi-Baraut-Muzaffarnagar route and the generalization of the results has been so attempted that the results can be applied to other roads 'of similar characteristics. It is recognised that driver and vehicular characteristics have not been incorporated in detail due to time and resource constraint. This Route, i.e.Delhi-Baraut-Muzaffarnagar route can be developed as an alternate route to Delhi-Meerut-Muzaffar nagar route, provided certain measures are taken to enhance the capacity of the roads of this route. The Baraut Budhana road has only earthen shoulders, while the Budhana Muzaffarnagar section has nonuniform brick shoulders. The time lost in each overtaking comes to be 10.2 second). on the single lane road. While for each crossing, it is 1.58 second. Presence of each animal drawn vehicle delays the journey by 1.62 second. The speed volume relationship for all the three types of roads, with the speed of vehicle as a dependent variable, and the traffic volume in Equivalent Passenger Car Unit as independent variable has been established. This (v) regression analysis has been using LOTUS 1-2-3 Package on PC-XT Computer System. Using the Speed Flow relationships, the capacities of all the three major type of roads, i.e. Single Lane, Intermediate Width and Double Lane Road have been found which occur at 35 Kmph speed of car at level of service E for Rural Roads. The Design Service Volumes for these roads have been found which are 45-50% of the capacities at level of service B for Rural Roads. The capacity of single lane, intermediate width and double lane road comes out to be 4000 EPCU/day, 11000 EPCU/day and 28000 EPCU/day respectively. The Design' Service Volume suggested for these three types of roads comes out to be 2000 EPCU/day, 5500 EPCU/day, and 14000 EPCU/day respectively. The Present Volume on Delhi Baraut Road (SH-57) is 11000 EPCU/day. It is suggested that the stretches of intermediate width should be converted into double lane road immediately, and, by the year 1995 it should be made as an uniform 4-lane highway. The present volume on Baraut Muzaffarnagar section which is single lane is 5200 EPCU/day. So it should be converted into intermediate width road immediately and by the year 1995, it should be developed as double lane road.en_US
