Abstract: Estimation is always a factor of importance in the realisation of a project. In the past it retained importance on the limit of expenditure. Today with possibilities of each aspect of design, selection of materials and construction, it is a factor to be considered in detail to achieve project cost efficiency. This dissertation is an attempt of the computerisation of Quantity Surveying and Estimating of building with special reference to framed structures. A general purpose computer program has been developed to compute the quantities of materials and labour and to prepare estimates of buildings. On the basis of research conducted in CBRI for approximate estimation of Residential and office buildings an interactive computer program has been developed. It has got three options : First option is of building type. Second option is either of computation of material (material, labour and door and window fitting) and cost or of material only. Third option is for computation of labour, material and door and window fitting individually and all together if required. The algorithm and the working of the program is explained thoroughly. Further the study also covers the development of a general program, for detailed estimation of important materials and labour for RCC framed construction. The algorithm and working of the program has been explained . . In order to illustrate the program a case study of building (Administrative block) haS been carried out and conclusions are arrived at.
