In spite of the use of established hydraulic principles for the design of hydraulic .structures, there exists lot of empiricism at different stages of their design. One therefore, uses one's own judgement based on experiences. The multiplicity of choices in selecting certain . parameters result in significantly different designs of such structures. All of them would not satisfy all the ideal requirements of a hydraulic ° structure. Accordingly one would prefer to have several alternative designs satisfying all the requirements and, then, select one which satisfies the requirementS of economy, functional utility, ease of construction and their operation and maintenance. With the advent of structure satisfying all the design constraints without loss of time. One can, then, select the most suitable design of these alternative designsen_US
