Side weirs are metering devices which are widely used in irrigation, land drainage and urban sewerage systems. Side weirs also serve as a means of diverting excess flow into the relief channels in the flood control works. For the computation of discharge over rectangular side weirs De Marchis equation is very common, but its use in practical application is tedious. In the present study, numerical method is adopted for calculating discharge over rectangular side weir. For the solution of spatially varied flow equation, a generalised nonlinear elementary discharge coefficient Ce is proposed and the expression for the same is deve-loped from the experimental data of the present study by using grid search method of optimization. Using this Ce, the discharge over the side weir may be accura-tely predicted.en_US
