Adsorption has received great attention in the recent, years as an efficient process for wastewater treatment. Besides COD,„several other substances like dyes, phenolic compounds and heavy metals can be effectively removed from the wastewater by adsorption. Although activated carbon has found wide acceptance by virtue of its high removal capacity and adaptability for a wide range of wastewater substances. Low cost adsorbents like fly ash, wood, peat, waste rubber, lignite, sawdust, rice husk etc. have received considerable interest because of their low cost and easy availability. This work has been carried out to asses the suitability of bagasse fly ash which is a waste from sugar industry, for removal of COD and colour from synthetic wastewater prepared from gur solution and sugar mill efflunet. Adsorption of COD and colour was studied.in batch and continuous systems using synthetic wastewater prepared from "Gur". The effect of adsorbent dose, initial COD concentration, contact time, pH were studied in batch experiments. The effect of bed height was examined in adsorption column. Removal of COD and colour from sugar industry effluent using bagasse fly ash was also studied. Removal of COD to the tune of 61.8% and 58.8% for wastewater for initial COD of 476 mg/1 by bagasse flyash and activated carbon was acheived respectively in a batch reactor. The contact time to attain equilibrium in case of bagasse flyash was 12 hr. and 16 hr. for activated carbon. Batch studies further reveal that the COD removal decreases with increasing initial COD concentration. The equilibrium data follow the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm model for removal of COD from synthetic wastewater. Lagergren plots for the synthetic wastewater suggests a first order rate -kinetics. Weber and Morris intraparticle diffusion plots have been presented for removal of COD by bagasse fly ash and activated carbon. Adsorption in a downflow fixed bed column gives effective COD removal. The effect of bed height on the breakthrough time for the wastewater has been examined based on the Bohart-Adams model and the constants are evaluated. Continuous test in fixed bed of bagasse fly ash for removal of COD was carried out to see the effect of bed height on breakthrough curve. Bohrat-Adam's model was found to be applicable.en_US
