Abstract: | The rural water distribution systems are predominantly dead-end distributions catering to smaller population densities. When accelerated or uneven growth 'occurs, the distribution system becomes inadequate before the end of its design life. As it is costly to replace an existing system by an entirely new system, attempts should be made to improve the delivery capability of the existing system by suitable modifications. In this dissertation an algorithm has been developed for strengthening. of radial water distribution systems to cater for increased demand. Algorithm has also been developed for rational conversion of continuous diameter solution to commercially available diameter solution. Optimization of an entirely new system is a particular case of this general approach. Optimal strengthening of pumping main has also been considered. Explicit equation has been developed for determining the diameter of new pipe to be added in parallel to the existing pumping main. |
