Issue Date: 1992
Abstract: Roorkee is an important and one of the oldest tehsil of the newly formed district Haridwar in Uttar Pradesh. SH-45 passes through Roarkee which leads to Haridwar, Rishikesh and Badrinath. Dehradun road also starts from Roorkee. There is not a good rail link between Muzaffarnagar to Haridwar, Saharanput to Haridwar and from Delhi to Dehradun. This add an extra loadiot Road transport at Roorkee city. In Haridwar, stone quarry, religious place, temples, Pirankaliyar at Roorkee and nearby tourist place,at Mussoorie and Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh are some of the reasons of increasing road transport in Roorkee. University, CBRI, Irrigation Department's large establishment, Cantonment and old city with good bussiness prospects are the reasons for heavy intracity traffic. theSe conditiOnS the basic aim of the study is to find out the critical'' intersections which are the 'biittlenecks for smobttitraffic'ql While on one hand intercity n'traffic is to paSs safely and quickly, and the other hand intracity traffic needs accessibility. The problem is acute in mixed traffic flow conditions. Specially at Intersections, urgent attention is needed, where, right turn movements and slow 'traffic create congestion,' traffic jam and chaotic scenes. In. the present study- some intersections have been identified. The- idenlied intersections are (i) Military intersection -(ii) University"GuestjHouse crossing (iii) Polaris intersection (iv) Roorkee-Tadkies Bengali Sweets intersection (v) Roorkee- Talkies Civil Lines crossing (vi) Ganga Bhawan crossing (vii) World Bank crossing (viii) Haridwar Chungi crossing (ix) Petrol Pump Civil Lines crossing (x) Dhanori Road crossing, (xi) Sabzi Mandi crossing (xii) Ram Nagar crossing. Out of the identified 12 intersections, 8 of which are on Delhi Nitipass Road. The classified traffic counts and traffic flow diagrams shows that some of the intersections need geometric improvement while others .need one way street traffic. Some of the important conclusions of the study include the following points: Military intersection is working more or less as T junction. It should be remodelled in the T junction form and rotary should be removed. It is recommended to signalize the Military intersection, Roorkee Talkies intersection and World Bank intersection. At University Guest House intersection matadors should not be allowed to alight passengers before turning right to University. Proper lights at Military intersection and Roorkee Talkies intersection are needed. At Roolrkee- talkies Prakath Sweets street should be allowed for receiving left turns from HaridWar road and should work as one way street only. Barrages,. repairs workshops on patri at World bank crossing and at other intersections should be immediately checked.
